On July 23, 2009, Chicago White Sox pitcher joined the rankings with greats like Cy Young and Sandy Koufax when he became the 18th ever to throw a perfect game. He is now one of 23 pitchers to ever maintain perfection for one game.
The game was set in front of a home crowd with 28,036 in attendance. The result was a 5-0 win against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Buehrle walked off the pitchers mound after throwing 116 pitches and striking six batters out.
The game was over after shortstop Alexei Ramirez threw the ball grounded by Jason Bartlet to first baseman Josh Fields for the force.
Buehre could not have done it with out a little help from his teammates though. Balls were hit to the outfield at times, and sometimes the infielders had to make the out.
Buehrle said this about the game, “It felt pretty good, it was just so hot I got a little lightheaded those first couple of innings.”
