On February 25, 1991, Canadian born comedian John Candy teamed up with Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as they purchased the Toronto Argonauts, a team in the Canadian Football League.
The Argonauts had their share of team leaders. Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons has since taken an office job with the Argos. Matt Dunigan, who dedicates his life to serving the community and has received honors like Honorary Chairman for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Rocket Ismail is a Notre Dame graduate who also spent some time with the NFL. And D.K. Smith who is thought of as one of the greatest players ever in the CFL.
Candy had a 20 percent steak in the team. He was credited with inspiring the team to win the Grey Cup at the end of the ’91 season. He was a part owner of the team until ’94. “Being a Toronto native, my family and I have been followers of this prestigious team through the good times and bad,” said Candy in the 1991 team media guide. “I look forward to the ’90’s and an Argonaut dynasty.”
Gretzky owned 20 percent of the team. He jumped on board with the owner of his team with the assumption he would be able to make a pretty penny off of turning the team around.
McNall was the majority owner with 60 percent. He was losing control of himself as he dipped into another fraudulent investment. He bought the Kings with a small fraction of what he said he had in his bank account. Despite convincing Gretzky to sign with the Kings and rebuilding the team from scratch, he lead both of his teams to bankruptcy. He finished his five years in jail sentence in 2002.
