As a life long Cubs fan I remember this game being a big deal, even if I was only seven years old. I remember watching the game on the family television, and seeing the newspaper the next day so this is an exciting post for me. This was the beginning of a new era for the team that lead up to the 2003 playoff run.
On May 6, 1998, Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood made history by throwing a 20 strikeout game. He pitched for all 9 innings, causing a one-hit shutout. His efforts showed little error as he came close to getting a perfect game. Wood threw the ball 122 times and faced 29 batters. He let one batter get a hit, he also hit one batter. There were no walks, and the Cubs did not have any errors. The Astros lost, with the final score being 2-0. However, the Astros went on to have a highly successful 102 win season and lead the National League in on base percentage.
At this time Wood was a 20 year old rookie who was taking the mound for his fifth carrier start. Hardly any pitchers get that close to a perfect game, especially their rookie year. Wood is one of two pitchers who have achieved the 20 strikeout status. The other was Roger Clemens who managed to achieve this milestone twice (1986 and 1996). His arm eventually got the best of him but his legacy lives in Chicago.
